Absolute best hospital I've ever gone to. LOVE this place!
Additionally, the first resident insisted on removing the splint that had been put on our daughters arm at the Ortho clinic as soon as she could despite knowing that it would be 4-5 hours before she could be seen or treated due to the anesthesia timeline. She felt very pushy and not like a pediatric ED doctor should.
While I understand that she may have been over worked and perhaps having a bad day being able to read the energy in a room and adjust your tone and energy to fit seems like a good skill to have as a doctor. Additionally being able to make parents feel as though they have been heard and respected goes a LONG way toward alleviating what is sure to be a stressful time. Our resident failed to listen to us telling her that all of the small tests she was trying to do had already been done twice at the Orthopedic clinic and that our daughter was about tapped out from a long day of poking and prodding.
After that first resident's shift was over however, things got 100% better. Our resident in the next shift was awesome, helpful, and had great energy/bedside manner, the nurses on duty during the later portion of our visit rocked. Really everyone aside from our first resident was the best. Our wait time to get a room was REALLY short which was nice, but the total time we were there was REALLY long due to the fact that we had to wait for 8 hours after lunch in order to be seen for the bone reset. Not anyone's fault at the ED, but ugh, it was a long day.
The first doctor that attempted to start an IV botched the job up twice, leading to a VERY VERY stressful situation. I insisted that another nurse try for the third attempt after a break and she got it on the first (third total) attempt. I understand that starting IVs isn't the easiest thing to do in the world, especially on a squirmy 5 year old, but it shouldn't take 3 tries...
The first med student who came to our room was excellent, nice and soft spoken at a time when our daughter was starting to really feel worn down and needed calming energy in the room. However, the resident who followed her was seemingly oblivious to the energy in the room and felt loud, abrasive, dismissive, and just overall obnoxious.
I've gone to Shands for almost fifteen years now and my experience has never been less than excellent. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and helpful, but they also understand sensitivity and have made going to the doctor, an otherwise unpleasant experience, something closer to seeing an old friend.
Its the premier Children's Hospital for this area of North Florida and the University of Florida affiliation means access to some of the top docs in their fields who are advancing science. They have made some much needed improvements recently to their Children's Hospital rooms and added a number of customer friendly features.
Anyone who puts less than 5 stars is absolutely out of thier minds. Shands is rated high is our country's top hospitals for various reasons. The staff here treat these kids as if they are theirs. My beautiful daughter and wife have been treated very fine here with nothing less than exceptional staff who are very professional and excellent at what they do! You don't have to have a medical background to understand just how excellent they are.
